Template Gallery options and pointers:
Two types of galleries in Squarespace:
Gallery sections — the entire section is a gallery; found by adding a section and looking for the exclamation point icon
Gallery blocks — a gallery added as a block within a section
Portfolios (separate feature) — thumbnail page that clicks through to fully formatted sub-pages; best for complex projects (sculptors, installation artists); included in the Pro template
Gallery types included in the template:
Gallery strip — maintains aspect ratio, organizes by row height, responsive; a personal favorite
Reel/scroll — allows mixed aspect ratios, horizontal scroll; great for showing a series of work
Grid — uniform thumbnails that open to a lightbox for larger viewing
Slideshow — can be problematic with mixed aspect ratios; doesn't support lightbox
Stacked/pinned scroll — image stays pinned while content scrolls; a cool effect to play with
Organizing galleries — use folders in the nav to group multiple galleries (e.g. works on paper, works on canvas) so visitors can browse by type
Always add SEO description to each gallery page explaining what the work is
Duplicate sections to create alternating left/right layouts easily — adds visual movement to the page
Custom CSS adds spacing between gallery images that Squarespace leaves out by default
Plugins available if you need more gallery functionality (lightbox, downloads, etc.)
