File Size and File Types: JPGs or PNGs?
Full-width banner images — max 2,500px wide, keep under 1MB
Standard page/gallery images — 1,000–1,500px wide
Thumbnails — go smaller; the less Squarespace has to work with, the faster it loads
JPEG = best for photographs; pixel-based images compress well and stay small (e.g. 200KB vs 1.6MB as a PNG)
PNG = use only when you need transparency (logos, graphics); larger file size
WebP = newer hybrid format; great file size with transparency support, but not universally supported yet — use cautiously
⚠️ Canva defaults to PNG — always manually switch to JPEG when downloading photographs
⭐ Core advice: right-size your images before uploading — even though Squarespace resizes them, starting with a large file still slows down your site
